Why do Nurse Entrepreneurs Start Businesses?
Why do nurse entrepreneurs go into business and leave the world of the clinical behind? There is not a lot in nursing school that teaches us how to run a business. You go to nursing school where you focus on the clinical skills needed to be a nurse.
- You don’t have exposure to business courses.
- You don’t understand sales and marketing.
- You don’t understand budgeting.
Something pushes nurses or pulls them into the process of starting their own businesses to become nurse entrepreneurs.
The common factors that take people out of the mindset of clinical and into the mindset of business
- Change – Whatever has been going on in the nurse’s career isn’t satisfying or fulfilling anymore.
- Wish for freedom – Nurse entrepreneurs want flexibility. They want more control over their destiny.
- Desire to be their own boss – They say, “I know I can do this better, I know I can make a difference.”
Critical Nurse Entrepreneur Skills
No matter what aspect of nursing business you are in, you need an entrepreneurial mindset. You need the ability to look at opportunities everywhere. When you turn that on, all of a sudden you see the potential in so many different things. Mindset is critical. To develop a strong sense of confidence is very important.
Nurse entrepreneurs need these 3 things
- clarity,
- confidence and
- contributions.
Clarity is so important because it’s not just clarity about what you’re going to do. It’s a clarity in how your message is delivered. We know how important sales and marketing is if you own your own business. If you’re confusing in the way that you deliver your message and it’s not clear, then you’re not going to have potential buyers.
As far as confidence is concerned, we all need confidence boosters, but you have to be confident to be able to speak about your business. You have to be confident to be able to write about your business. You have to know that you can deliver on the promise that you’re making.
You contribute in multiple ways. It’s through family. It’s through your community. It’s globally. It’s to your profession. Our businesses contribute to the financial stability of our employees. We need to be contributors and by being successful in business you’re able to contribute to all those areas. Nurse entrepreneurs who possess these skills have a foundation for success.
