Who is driving your business?

Kathleen AstonThis is Buffy. Cute, no? Even from the back. But she’s not YOU and she shouldn’t be behind the wheel driving your business bus to who knows where.

But the bigger issue is, how did Buffy get the keys? And who left the door to the bus open in the first place?

I hate to tell you this, but it was you. You didn’t do this intentionally, but you did it just the same. (OK…no sense hollering “NO”…it’s true. Don’t believe me? Read on.)

You see, Buffy is your default driver. She’s the one who takes the wheel as you careen through your day in muddled chaos trying to get everything done. And although she looks cute in this picture, she tends to morph into other less cuddly, destructive creatures all that belong to an inbred, proliferating species called self-sabotage.

All breeds of the self-sabotage species are hairy (in a tangled-mess kind of way). And all will tend to badger you non-stop, consume all your energy, poop all over your work, eat your lunch when you’re not looking…and basically chew up everything good in your business until there is nothing left.

Oh, wait…you’re still there in a rumpled mess wondering where you went wrong. And you didn’t really go wrong…you just didn’t know how self-sabotage could sneak up on you and take control of your business!

Varieties of self-sabotage who are driving your business

There are four common genres of the hairy self-sabotage species. You might recognize them most readily as chronic procrastination, perfectionism, self-comparison and lack of motivation. Yup. You’ve seen them before. Nasty, right?

But when it comes to your business, this species is not just nasty, it’s downright deadly. And no matter if your dealing with all the breeds or just a few, there is only one way to get rid of them. Grab them by the throat (poor Buffy), wrestle them to the ground, and beat the tar out of them.

Oh…how do you do this without being arrested? (Really, I don’t want to see you on the 6 o’clock news!) You first learn to spot each one.

that was a wonderful analogy! Especially since we raise show dogs and our 13 year old thinks she can drive! 😉 Thank you for those thought provoking words. It is time for me to play I SPY.
