Social media will become vital to your networking strategy. Social media affords us the unique opportunity to reach and market to more people than we could even 10 years ago.
Myth #1: You must use every single social media platform.
Want to get burned out fast?
I didn’t think so.
Not every social media platform will work for you. For instance, where your ideal client will be? If they cannot be found on Pinterest or Instagram, why would you tackle those platforms just for the sake of being seen everywhere, only to reach a dead-end?
Instead, focus on using LinkedIn. As a professional LNC, it makes sense for you because of all the other social media platforms, this is geared for the ‘professionals.
Facebook could be a potential consideration, as long as you are very clear of who you are and what you do. Find groups that you can find your potential client. Interact socially, but not salesy.
Make sure your profiles are up to date, including your headshot.
Myth #2: Aim for every post to go viral.
While it is fun when a post goes viral, these types of posts are meant to be entertaining or thought-provoking. Can you remember what company sponsored them? I can’t either, so while going viral can be fun, you will not necessarily gain contacts and a revenue stream.
Provide value in your posts mixed with a little bit of your personality. Your ideal client wants to connect with you and learn more about the value you provide.
There are always new viral posts and videos. You don’t – and shouldn’t – want to compete with them.
Myth #3: Having a large number of followers will increase your profits.
Sure, it feels good when you have tons of followers but are they interacting with you? Are they seeking what you have to offer? Do they ever ‘like’ or ‘share’ a post? If not, they are not likely to hire you.
Evaluate your posts. Are they boring? Could that be why no one responds to them?
Be more creative and pay attention to interaction. Perhaps you need to re-evaluate your niche. Read what they post and see what interaction they receive. Do not copy them; be inspired by them.
Who are they following?
Who follows them?
Remember, you should drill down on your target and fine-tune from there.
Social Media is ‘social’, so make sure that you are paying attention to their comments, reactions, and posts. Respond to them.
Be where they hang out. Engage! Present yourself as you would want your ideal client to see you.
