How to Choose a Book Writing Course
You recognize the power of being an author – the authority credibility, and satisfaction that comes with being able to put your book in another person’s hands. And you realize you don’t want to navigate your writing journey alone. How can you choose the book writing course right for you?
Self-Paced or Live Book Writing Courses
Self-paced course
This will typically be a pre-packaged course. The producer sells a collection of audios and possibly videos, accompanied by a PDF. You work at your own pace, and have no personal contact with the instructor or with others who are taking the course.
If you are a naturally self-directed person who can follow his or her own schedule and gets things done at a reasonable rate, this may be for you. It’s the least expensive of the options.
You may or may not complete this type of course. There is no accountability and no feedback so you have to be highly motivated and without need for contact with others.
Don’t ask me how many courses like this I’ve bought and never opened.
Live courses
These meet according to a schedule. The course will usually employ some kind of video technology. You’ll see the instructor’s face and those of the other students. You will have the opportunity to ask questions.
The course will often have a private Facebook page where you can have further interactions with the instructor and the other students.
You will have some private interaction with and critique by the instructor. You are expected to turn in assignments according to the schedule the instructor sets.
What Should You Look For?
I’ve listed the basics of live courses. Certain variations may matter to you and your schedule.
How often does the course meet? There’s no right or wrong to this, but you should consider what works best for your schedule.
Look at the pace of the course. Do you think that a week will give you enough time to complete each? Would an every-two-week or once-a-month format work better for you?
Does it cover your area of interest? Choose one that’s as closely matched to the kind of book you plan to write as possible. If you want to write a nonfiction book that will advance your legal nurse consulting business, don’t pick a course designed to write fiction or poetry. There are very different types of books.
Does the book writing course offer a money-back guarantee? I have never seen one that doesn’t, but I feel obliged to mention this. You need to have the chance to see how this is working out for you.
How accessible is the instructor? After reading the course material, you will probably have at least one question. I recommend that you send out an exploratory email to the instructor. See what kind of an answer you get. Is it warm, encouraging, and comprehensible? This is a good sign. Does he or she urge you to email back if anything isn’t clear. This is even better.
You’re making an investment. Spend your money and your time wisely on a book writing course.
